Your crash happened a day or two ago. You may still be sore, still waiting on the repair estimate, still sorting out what happened. And your phone keeps ringing with calls from law firms you have never heard of, marketing companies, and people who already seem to know where and when your accident happened. If you are wondering how they got your number and whether any of this is legitimate, you are asking the right questions.
In this article, we explain why these calls happen, what Washington’s professional conduct rules actually say about them, which early phone call poses the real risk to your claim, and how to find a lawyer the right way.
When a collision is reported in Washington, it generates records. Police collision reports, tow records, and emergency response data all create a paper trail. Some of that information becomes accessible through public records, and an industry has grown up around collecting it quickly and selling it.
Many of the calls you receive after a crash are not from lawyers at all. They come from lead-generation companies and call centers that gather accident data, contact victims, and then sell the resulting “lead” to whichever firm is paying for the information. The person on the phone may imply they are calling from a law office, a claims department, or even something that sounds vaguely official. Their job is to get you to agree to representation.
Other calls do come directly from law firms or people working on their behalf. Either way, the pattern is the same. You did not contact them. They found you, fast, because your accident became a data point worth money.

Attorney solicitation in Washington is governed by Rule of Professional Conduct 7.3, which the Washington Supreme Court amended in 2021. Under the current rule, a lawyer may contact someone after an accident to offer their services, unless the contact crosses specific lines, such as:
There is one more piece. Washington lawyers are not permitted to pay non-lawyers for recommending their services or channeling cases to them. This is the rule that puts the lead-generation companies described earlier on the wrong side of the line. A firm paying a marketing operation to find and deliver accident victims as clients is itself a violation, before a single call is even made.
A few practical rules cover nearly every unsolicited call you will get after a crash:

The right way to hire a personal injury lawyer looks nothing like the calls described above. It starts with you, on your timeline. Ask people you trust for referrals. Read reviews. Look at how a firm handles cases like yours and whether it actually practices in the courts where your case would land. Then reach out to the firm yourself and see how the firm treats you before any agreement is signed.
Washington also gives you a simple way to verify any lawyer before you talk to them. The Washington State Bar Association maintains a public legal directory where you can confirm that an attorney is licensed and in good standing, and see whether they have any public discipline history. If a caller pressures you to commit before you have had the chance to run that thirty-second check, that pressure is your answer. A firm confident in its reputation wants you to look it up.
If you were injured in a crash anywhere in Western Washington, Anderson Injury | Law Attorneys are happy to answer your questions with no pressure and no obligation. We do not cold-call accident victims, and we never will. We believe the way a firm finds its clients reflects the way it treats them.
Our clients come to us through referrals from past clients, from people in the communities we serve, and from their own research, and they talk to us when they are ready, not when a lead generator decides their case is worth selling.
When someone does reach out, the first conversation is a free case evaluation. We tell people honestly whether they need a lawyer, what their claim may involve, and what their next steps should be. And for anyone whose phone is still ringing with calls they never asked for, we can help with those conversations, too.
