Motorcycle Accidents

Fresh air, convenience, gas-savings … the benefits of riding motorcycles are plentiful. But because helmets and padding simply cannot compete with the hard shell of a car or truck, motorcyclists often suffer serious physical trauma in a personal injury accident. For this reason, Washington State has passed several laws to prevent motorcycle accidents and to protect motorcyclists involved in an incident.

Causes of Motorcycle Accidents

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), the number of fatal motorcycle accidents has doubled in the past 10 years. Common causes of motorcycle accidents include:

  • Speeding and other reckless driving
  • Inability to negotiate a curve
  • Intoxication
  • Improper passing
  • Mechanical problems
  • Improper design
  • Unsafe weather conditions

The leading cause of bad motorcycle accidents is simply that the driver of another vehicle – usually a car – did not see the slim form of the motorcycle and failed to yield the right of way.

Motorcycle Laws in Washington State for Riders

So, how are motorcyclists protected from motorcycle accidents? Although the state does not require motorcyclists to purchase insurance for a moped or a motorcycle, state laws do require riders to purchase and wear a helmet while riding, even if they ride an off-road motorcycle. Moreover, riders are restricted from traveling side by side in a single lane or from passing vehicles in-between lanes.

Motorcycle Specifications

To further protect riders, Washington State law requires all motorcyclists to have the following:

  • A muffler
  • Two side mirrors
  • Turn signals if they existed upon purchase
  • Passenger seat and footrest if carrying a passenger
  • Less than or equal to 30 inches of distance between the handlebars and the seat
